Explore The Sani Pass and Lesotho the Wild 4X4 Way

Meet the Lesotho on Track Family

Lesotho On Track is a family run business built around something we know incredibly well: exploring the mountains, backroads and remote corners of Lesotho.

At the heart of it are father and daughter team Murray and Sam Cairns, based in the small mountain town of Underberg at the foot of the Southern Drakensberg.

Murray has been part of the Sani Pass and Lesotho tourism industry for more than two decades. Over the years, he has travelled these mountain roads countless times, built lasting relationships within the communities we visit and developed an intimate knowledge of the region that only comes from years spent exploring it.

Sam grew up around the family tourism business before spending seven years travelling and working abroad. After returning home to South Africa, she joined Murray in the business and discovered that some of the most extraordinary travel experiences were right on her doorstep. Her own love of remote places and immersive travel now plays a big part in shaping the experiences Lesotho On Track offers today.

Together, they bring two different perspectives to the business, but share the same philosophy: the best journeys are personal, unhurried and give you the time and space to truly get beneath the surface of a destination.

That philosophy extends to the entire Lesotho On Track team. Our guides aren’t simply drivers taking guests from one attraction to the next. They are experienced storytellers, mountain-road experts and warm, knowledgeable hosts who have spent years sharing this remarkable part of Southern Africa with travellers from around the world.

We keep our experiences personal, choose our routes and stops carefully, and venture beyond the usual tourist trail whenever we can.

After so many years spent exploring Lesotho, we still find new reasons to love this remarkable little country, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than sharing it with the people who travel with us.

The Experts of Sani Pass and Lesotho

Your On Track Guides

Martin

Spend a day in Lesotho with Martin and you’ll quickly understand why guests so often describe him as a walking guidebook.

Martin has been guiding travellers through the Sani Pass and Lesotho for more than 20 years, including over a decade working alongside our family. His knowledge of the mountains, history, culture and communities of Lesotho is extraordinary, but it’s his warm, easy going way of sharing it that makes travelling with him so special.

Born in Stepmore, KwaZulu Natal, and now living with his family in Himeville, Martin knows this corner of Southern Africa intimately. He’s the kind of guide who can answer almost any question, spot something interesting you’d otherwise have driven straight past, and make a group of strangers feel completely at home.

After all these years, his enthusiasm for sharing Lesotho hasn’t faded, and we’re incredibly lucky to have him leading our guests into the Mountain Kingdom.

Njabulo

It’s difficult to spend much time with Njabulo without encountering his enormous smile.

Born and raised in the village of Impendle, he has been part of our team for more than nine years and is one of the kindest, most down-to-earth people you could hope to travel with.

Njabulo has a wonderfully calm and welcoming nature and a genuine instinct for looking after people. Whether he’s navigating the mountain roads, helping behind the scenes or making sure every guest is comfortable and enjoying their day, he’s always willing to go that little bit further.

His warmth, patience and easy sense of humour have made him a favourite with guests over the years, and a much loved part of the Lesotho On Track family.

Responsible Tourism & Community Support

Our Sani Pass Tours take you through the breathtaking Ukhlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site, a truly unique environment. Our entire team are deeply committed to protecting this precious landscape and are vigilant in ensuring that no harm comes to it, and will not hesitate to confront or report anyone who is found harvesting plants or animals or littering along the Sani Pass. This is a responsibility we take very seriously.

As a tour company operating in the Sani Pass region, we embrace our role in preserving its natural beauty. Each year, we are committed to actively participating in the Sani Pass Alien Eradication project, helping to maintain the pristine environment we’re so proud to share with our guests.

While the roads department does work towards repairing and maintaining the road, we too as tour operators collaborate with the local community in Lesotho when needed to help improve drainage to prevent wash-aways as well as take part in the annual litter cleanup efforts.

In addition, Lesotho On Track runs a donation program where guests can purchase an optional donation pack to hand-deliver to the locals in Lesotho during their tour. It is a meaningful way to give back and connect with the communities that make this region so special. (Feel free to contact us for more information on how to get involved in the program)
