Journey from Underberg into the heart of the Drakensberg on one of Southern Africa’s most iconic mountain adventures. Travelling in a comfortable 4×4 with our expert guides, you’ll climb the legendary Sani Pass, a dramatic ascent of winding switchbacks, soaring cliffs, and breath taking viewpoints, before crossing into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Enjoy time to explore local curio shops, visit a traditional Basotho homestead, taste warm bread baked on an open fire, and experience authentic Lesotho song and dance. Lunch is enjoyed either at a local restaurant or at the renowned Highest Pub in Africa, surrounded by sweeping alpine views, before we descend the pass and return to Underberg in the late afternoon.

Transfers from Durban can be arranged on request.

Morning

Sani Pass Day Tour

9:00AM – 9:30AM
  • The Sani Pass Day Trip kicks off from either Underberg or Himeville. Departure times may vary depending on where your accommodation is situated.
10:00AM
  • We’ll make a brief stop at the South African Border Post – situated at the base of the Sani Pass.
11:30AM
  • On reaching the summit we will make another brief stop to stamp passports at the Lesotho Border Post while you’ll also get to shop for some local curios.
11:45AM – 12:15PM
  • Visit an authentic Basotho home & enjoy freshly baked local bread.
Afternoon
12:30PM
  • OPTIONAL: Enjoy a cold beer and a hearty lunch at the Highest Pub in Africa, or an authentic local restaurant, the choice is yours.
2:00PM
  • We begin our decent back down the Sani Pass.
3:30PM
  • Arrival back in Underberg / Himeville.

Sani Pass Day Tour Lunch Options

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, we offer several lunch options during our tour. Please review each option below and select your preference when making your booking. Your choice is needed for us to make the necessary arrangements in advance.

Please Note:

The Highest Pub in Africa charges an entrance fee of R200 per adult and R100 per child under 12. This fee is not included in our tour price, as visits to the pub are subject to availability. Should your tour include a stop at the Highest Pub, the entrance fee will be payable on the day.

This fee is however redeemable at the restaurant and bar and will be deducted from your bill.

Option 1

Lunch at The Highest Pub in Africa

Due to the lodges limited capacity, The Highest Pub in Africa are only able to welcome guests with prior reservations. Kindly note that the pub has a maximum capacity of 40 guests per day so although we do our best to secure reservations in advance, availability cannot always be guaranteed.

Lunch at a Basotho Restaurant

Pause your adventure at a local Basotho restaurant where you’ll get to watch everyday life unfold. Enjoy simple yet hearty meals from toasted sandwiches and burgers to traditional homemade stews paired with Lesotho’s beloved local beer. It’s the perfect way to refuel while soaking in the rhythm of mountain life.

Bring Your Own Picnic Lunch

For those who prefer, you are welcome to bring your own snacks / packed lunches to enjoy amidst Lesotho’s wild landscapes .Our guides will help find the perfect scenic spot to stop and enjoy a bite to eat. This flexible option lets travellers maximise their time soaking up Lesotho and is great for anyone with special dietary needs.

Important Travel Information

Our tours typically depart from and return to the Grind Cafe in Underberg (view map). Alternatively we can pick you up from any of our listed nearby accommodations. If you’re staying within Underberg or Himeville but don’t see your accommodation listed in our pick up menu please contact us and we’ll confirm if a complimentary pick up will be possible.

Meeting time is 9.00 AM for a 9:15 AM departure (Please note that departure times may vary if you are being picked up from your accommodation – in this case we will confirm your exact pick up time with you).

Return time is approximately 3.30-4.00 PM.

Warmer Months (October – March):
Opt for lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. We also always recommend carrying a warm jacket, as temperatures may drop suddenly.

Colder Months (April – September):
Dress in warm layers, with outerwear suitable for snow, closed shoes, and accessories like a beanie and scarf.

No expired passports or copies will be accepted.
Kindly note that if you join the tour and are denied entry into Lesotho due to not having the required visa or valid passport, you will need to wait at the South African Border Post either until the tours returns, or a transfer at your own expense is available. No refund will be provided.
