Journey from Underberg into the heart of the Drakensberg on one of Southern Africa’s most iconic mountain adventures. Travelling in a comfortable 4×4 with our expert guides, you’ll climb the legendary Sani Pass, a dramatic ascent of winding switchbacks, soaring cliffs, and breathtaking viewpoints, before crossing into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Enjoy time to explore local curio shops, visit a traditional Basotho homestead, taste warm bread baked on an open fire, and experience authentic Lesotho song and dance. Lunch is enjoyed either at a local restaurant or at the renowned Highest Pub in Africa, surrounded by sweeping alpine views, before we descend the pass and return to Underberg in the late afternoon.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, we offer several lunch options during our tour. Please review each option below and select your preference when making your booking. Your choice is needed for us to make the necessary arrangements in advance.

Kindly note that The Highest Pub in Africa charges an entrance fee of R200 per adult and R100 per child under 12. This fee is not included in our tour price, as visits to the pub are subject to availability. Should your tour include a stop at the Highest Pub, the entrance fee will be payable on the day. This fee is however redeemable at the restaurant and bar and will be deducted from your bill.

Due to the lodges limited capacity, The Highest Pub in Africa are only able to welcome guests with prior reservations. Kindly note that the pub has a maximum capacity of 40 guests per day so although we do our best to secure reservations in advance, availability cannot always be guaranteed.

Pause your adventure at a local Basotho restaurant where you’ll get to watch everyday life unfold. Our Sani Pass Day Trip typically depart from and return to the Grind Cafe in Underberg (view map). Alternatively we can pick you up from any of our listed nearby accommodations. If you’re staying within Underberg or Himeville but don’t see your accommodation listed in our pick up menu please contact us and we’ll confirm if a complimentary pick up will be possible. 

DEPARTURE/RETURN TIME

Meeting time is 9.00 AM for a 9:15 AM departure (Please note that departure times may vary if you are being picked up from your accommodation – in this case we will confirm your exact pick up time with you).
Return time is approximately 3.30-4.00 PM.

WHAT TO WEAR

Warmer Months (October – March): Opt for lightweight clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. We also always recommend carrying a warm jacket, as temperatures may drop suddenly.
Colder Months (April – September): Dress in warm layers, with outerwear suitable for snow, closed shoes, and accessories like a beanie and scarf.
